Eighteen years ago today, I lost my best friend, LCDR Otis Vincent Tolbert, USN, when he was killed during the September 11 attack on the Pentagon. Vince did NOT like his first name, Otis; he thought it to be a bit too ethnic. Or, as he put it, "Are you kidding me? Otis? Could it be ANY more typical?" Vince loved his wife, Sherry, and their three kids, Amanda, Brittany and Anthony. And I'd be willing to bet just about anything that I'm not the only one of his brother USN officers who refer to him as their best friend; he was THAT kind of guy, and you didn't have to know him very long before you felt really close to him.

I chose this watch today because its all-black coating and black-diamond pave dial seemed perfect to wear as a mourning timepiece.

Like so many friends who knew him, I weep every September 11th; for my loss, his family's loss, and the loss we should all feel when someone like Vince passes on...

There are a lot more rocks there now than when this photo was taken...

It's a solemn day for me as well as I was in the Pentagon on 9\11. Long story short... I was within 20 min. of losing my life there too. I was standing near where the plane came into the building when I got a page (before pocket size cell phones became popular) from my office to return for a meeting. I left the building and arrived at the office in Alexandria to see the news on the TV. Strangely my pager almost never worked inside the Pentagon, but on that day I was standing in front of a window and it went off. I called my office and was told about the meeting and left the building just in time...

Heavy thoughts in the prior posts. Respect and a moment of silence for all the lives lost...

    And, my watch....

Another micro that was a great buy -- even came with a canvas watch roll. This is the Dryden Chronograph Diver, matched to a navy and white strap I sourced, which turned out to compliment the dial color scheme exactly. Seiko Mechaquartz VK63, sapphire crystal, 100m WR, a beautiful build, I felt, for such a reasonable cost. 42mm case, 13.5mm thickness. Outstanding lume, with use of Swiss Superluminova BGW9 -- even a glow in just low light.

Watch fan for over fifteen years now. Seems no end in sight. House will eventually collapse under the weight of watches and winders, but at least I'll always know what time it is!
