Not that I purchase high end timepieces...but I will be doing a lot more window shopping for the next few months until this virus concern hopefully settles down. Now if any prices go insane low...maybe another thought.

I would say this is a good question for Wambo.

:hmm: You have a better chance catching it at McDonald's or shopping at the market for some prime beef.

It's not going to be transported on a box," Dr. Michael Ison, an infectious disease specialist at Northwestern University, says of your chances of contracting the novel coronavirus from packages shipped from China.

In an era of online shopping and global shipping, some NPR listeners have written to us with this question: Am I at risk of catching the new coronavirus from a package I receive from China?

Almost certainly no, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Because of poor survivability of these coronaviruses on surfaces, there is likely very low risk of spread from products or packaging that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient temperatures," the CDC concludes in its Q&A.

Infectious disease specialists we spoke with were even more definitive.

"It's not going to be transported on a box," says Dr. Michael Ison of Northwestern University, who studies viral infections among transplant patients, who have weakened immune systems.

Coronaviruses are thought to mainly spread from person to person via respiratory droplets, researchers say. And, so far, the novel coronavirus seems to have spread only among people who were in close personal contact.

While there's still a lot unknown about this particular coronavirus, experts have a sense of what to expect, based on experience with previous strains that have led to outbreaks of serious illness, such as SARS and MERS.

"There is no evidence from any previous outbreak that anyone has ever gotten infected from a package," Elizabeth McGraw, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics at Pennsylvania State University, tells NPR.

You have a higher risk of early death from fast food fries Eric.

French fries have a lot of fat and salt that could raise the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Americans have had a love affair with french fries for a very long time. In fact, Thomas Jefferson is credited with serving the first french fries in America in 1802 at the White House.

The bad news is that we may need to find a fast food with a lot less fat and salt. A new study has discovered a link between frequent eating of french fries and an increased risk of premature death.

The research took place over eight years and was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The study analyzed the dietary habits of 4,400 people ages 45 to 79, focusing on how often participants ate potatoes — fried or not.

Researchers found that people who consumed fried potatoes — whether french fries, tater tots or hash browns — at least twice a week could more than double their risk of premature death. And the most shocking result was that, by the end of the study, 236 participants had died.

Now if any prices go insane low...maybe another thought.
:palm:

:hmm: Throwing caution to the wind to save a few bucks on "insanely low prices" doesn't scream conviction to this remark. You're either all in or not, unless you place a dollar value on your life if truly worried.

People with a single co-morbidity who catch avian flu (H7N9) are 3.4 times more likely than otherwise-healthy flu ...

Some people, such as health care workers, are at increased risk

I know some teachers who are freaking out who have a lot of Asian families in their territory. Parents sending kids to school with colds and they are sneezing all over the classroom without covering up. My advice is to find another career and don't touch anything or grade papers if you're that concerned about it. At this stage there is no way to tell if anyone is traveling regardless of ethnicity. Disease, sickness and death does not discriminate in life.

I'm not sure if I understand the thread completely. If you are saying you are afraid of getting sick from a shipped watch I would say that risk is quite low. If you are asking if you should save up the money you would spend on several "lesser" watches and get one better one....to that I say go for the better one.

Trying not to catch the virus from any source, and stay well enough to enjoy the one's you have.
Thinking watch sales along with a lot of other things will crater if it gets bad.

An active virus needs warmth, humidity, and a living host to survive, it cannot live on cold steel...
That being said, it may be able to travel in FL in the crystal haze for quite a few days... :ccc:

On Friday I went into Boston there was tons of people roaming around town, wouldn't think anyone was worried about the virus. I hit every watch and jewelry store tried on several dozen watches talked to several sales people. They all told me they expect prices to drop very soon. Told me ever to hold off on any high end purchases and they said it has nothing to do with COVID-19 just prices will be coming down. I spent a lot of time in these stores and was either the only one in the store or was one of two or just three people in the stores. I think people just are not making large purchases! I was offered a few discounts on some brands but with my limit and the fact nothing really jumped out at me I just didn't feel I wanted anything. I did come close to pulling the trigger on a Blue Dial JBW ROOK at Nordstrom Rack but changed my mind at the last second. I did see a Gervil Triton I liked on their site I might order but i will search for a deal/better price.

As far as getting sick from a package, I get a ton of items from China thru Ebay and WISH. I hit them with disinfectant before I open them and wipe the items down then wash my hands after. It might be over kill but things like this can mutate and change their habits. Since I had Lymes just s few months ago and came down with some crazy rash and stomach bug about a month and a half ago and still am not 100% I am not taking chances! I admit I walked around and carried a small bottle of hand sanitizer and was constantly putting it on my hands

For all its worth here is some good advice...

If at all possible try to avoid places where you are in close contact with people.

Avoid touching your face as much as possible and don't shake peoples hands.

Wash your hands regularly.

It hasn't been shown that you can get the virus from objects. It is transmitted airborne by close contact with someone that is already infected. Don't be afraid but just be vigilant especially if you are older or already in poor health.

Being a mail carrier I have been delivering stuff from China everyday since this pandemic began. I'm concerned about the virus itself, but not concerned about packages giving me the virus. I"m a semi hypochondriac but isn't worried as not a single epidemiologist has said it is likely to be spread by anything other then direct proximity to someone who is infected. That said I'm not going on vacation to see my wife's parents in Arizona like we scheduled next week because they are in there 70's and have underlying conditions so my wife and I don't want to risk being in a tight quartered full plane with the possibility of someone not knowing they are infected being on a plane and us then bringing the virus to someone not as healthy as ourselves. Also am putting off a planned two night stay at a local casino because casino's are a germs paradise. Everybody touching everything one after the next and once again if someone is unaware they have the virus or show no symptoms there is risk there that I guess I don't need to take right now besides losing all my money. I'm out in public all day, handling packages and letters all day, delivering to people's houses and apartments all day and unless the virus is in my community I'm not going to worry myself sick. I'm also not going to up my risks by not listening to what the actual experts are saying to do. So far one postal worker in Washington has had the virus and it wasn't because he got it at work, he got it from community spread. All of us in the delivery business including Roadwarrior are going about our daily work lives and we handle packages and pallet loads all day long. That said for more reasons then I can count going on a cruise is not on my to do list anytime soon. The first case in our state was from someone who just left a cruise. Our second case is from someone who was recently in Italy.

You don't seem too worried about chowing down those french fries and other junk food like sodium filled dips and chips. Don't you think they could possibly have some effect on the longevity and quality of life. Or are you a selective worry wart?

I will let you know if I survive Eric. AliExpress just notified me the package that has been in limbo is on the way. I also have a package from Clemens (H20 Germany) scheduled to arrive today or tomorrow.

Wouldn't hurt to give it a shot...

I really don't have any issues with packages from Asia, my window shopping comment was for waiting for price reductions if the economy tanks and yes being healthy enough at that time to still enjoy them. :dunno:

Remember...I have a Parnis inbound from China...

Work gives us this stuff to keep in our tractors. I won't waste it on spraying mail. I save it for the dirt bags who use my equipment when I am off. I've come back from vacation to find leftover chicken bones covered with maggots. I told dispatch either get me another rig and send this one to Penske to have steam cleaned or find another driver for this route. This is used as an example of the systemic problem in general with things like this virus. Some people are inconsiderate and will sneeze, cough, etc. without covering up. I can only imagine what you would find on some of the food from your favorite fast food joints if sent out to a lab.

Shocking "filth" legally allowed in your food – Did you know there can be 450 insect parts and nine rodent hairs every 16 oz. box of spaghetti? There's no way to get rid of all the creatures that might hitch a ride along the food processing chain, but US Food and Drug Administration has set some food defects standards to keep them to a minimum.
