MUO NIO NALUSTA : it is a meteorite originating from the core of an asteroid orbiting between Mars and Jupiter. It is thought to be 4.5 billion years old

The David Rutten Streamline Meteorite watch uses a material that has gained a great deal of exposure in the watchmaking industry for its naturally formed, and (truly) unique appearance. Every piece of meteorite is individual. To understand exactly how this fascinating material came by such character we must go back, not to the start of David Rutten’s personal journey in the watchmaking industry, but all the way back to the birth of the Universe.
Inspired by the Art-deco style, the Streamline is the reflection of another space-time but remains deeply rooted in its period.
David Rutten has restyled aperture watches with jumping-hours from the 30’s. This layout puts the emphasis on the metal of the case, which aim is to magnify the pattern of the meteorite.
Made in Switzerland, this jumping-hour mechanism has exclusively been developed for the Streamline. The frequency is 28800 bph (4hz) and it offers a power reserve of 5 days.
Powering this striking wrist sculpture is the proprietary DR01 Movement, which features a jumping-hour complication that complements the passing of the minutes and seconds perfectly. The movement itself measures a robust 33.3mm, filling the case from edge-to-edge, and providing an excellent view of the specially tailored mechanics when the watch is viewed from the obverse side. The movement has an operating frequency of 28,800vph and a very substantial power reserve of 120-hours (which equates to 5 days), which is derived from two hand-wound barrels. The absence of a rotor weight frees up the view of the remarkable caliber, reduces the thickness of the watch for wearing comfort, and encourages the wearer to interact with their timepiece by winding it manually once every few days.
While it is quite costly in terms of time and money to machine the meteorite, the greatest challenge we had to face during the development of the Streamline was arguably to find an exclusive movement featuring the complication we wanted : jumping hour, minutes, dragging seconds, all in line.
It would have been unthinkable for us that a precious metal such as meteorite could be powered by an ETA 2892, as it was proposed by many protagonists… Thus we tirelessly looked into the watchmaking galaxy, until we found the movement calibrated for the Streamine, on both counts of exclusiveness and dimensions, because we wanted the movement to take up the entire case, as in the vintage watches that fascinate us.
So, what about this caliber? We noted a few years ago that mid-size calibers between the 7750 (30mm) and the Unitas (36.6mm) were nowhere to be found on the market. That was before the DR01 caliber with jumping-hours : round caliber, measuring 33.3mm, or 14 ¾ lines, about 8mm thick with its discs. The frequency is 28800 bph (4hz), with a 120-hours power reserve, which is a working week without having to wind it up. We opted for a sober “octahedron” decoration and a “Ruttenium” treatment of the bridges to stick with the meteoritic theme.
Our jumping-hour system, developed by our partner, if of recent design. The jump sharply takes place without preliminary clutch of the hour-disc. There’s no perceptible shaking or oscillations. And above all, you can hear it jumping, which is an additional sound complication.

In order to enhance this retro design, David provided the DR01 with vertical gadroons in line with the streamline spirit, this art deco sub-genre, indissociable from the golden age of the American dream. We still have in mind the gorgeous trains and buses, the creation of which was partly made by the French man Raymond Loewy… Those streamlines were expected to improve aerodynamics, but it turned out to be kind of a pre-wind tunnel mythological belief, as we know today that it is far from being the case. Never mind, this design and its retro SF look remains the swansong of modernism, and the allegory of the American way of life. There are still a few museum pieces that continue to fascinate…
