NOMOS is one of the best entry doors into the world of true mechanical watchmaking, with a collection of time-only watches with in-house calibers starting at around $1500 with the Club Campus collection. However, as you climb within the NOMOS range, you begin to discover some interesting takes on seemingly-everyday complications like a date window or a power reserve indicator, all powered with well-finished NOMOS manufacture calibers from the heart of German watchmaking in Glashütte, Germany. In this video, I'll take a look at two of the brand's brand new, more upscale offerings in the Tangente Neomatik 41 Update & Metro Neomatik 41 Update, each sharing a novel date display made possible by the DUW 6101.

In all NOMOS calibers, the date ring is placed around the movement. In neomatik date, this caliber is particularly large. The first neomatik caliber with a date mechanism, it remains wonderfully slender. The date display can be made even clearer, and is particularly legible.

Outstanding mechanics from Glashütte: The first neomatik caliber with a date, setting a new standard. The NOMOS automatic caliber neomatik date (DUW 6101) is not only very large—at only 3.6 millimeters in height, it is also extremely thin. That’s because this caliber was redesigned from start to finish, and the date mechanism has been integrated into it.

The result is that the new NOMOS watches with this caliber feature the date where it should be—both traditionally- and aesthetically-speaking: on the edge of the dial. For timepieces with a diameter larger than 40 mm, this is unique.
Since the date ring is placed around the DUW 6101 movement, the design of these new date watches allows for the greatest degree of freedom. The resulting aesthetic is innovative, highly individual, and harmonious. The new NOMOS date is not only easily legible; depending on the exact model, it is also up to three times larger than standard date windows.

The date can be set quickly and easily in both directions, with only a few turns of the crown needed for any adjustment. The NOMOS swing system, in particular, ensures the high precision of the movement. This proprietary escapement, denoted by its tempered blue balance spring, is accompanied by several watchmaking characteristics typical for Glashütte timepieces—such as the three-quarter plate, ribbing polish, tempered screws. All of which highlights engineering and watchmaking of the highest standard.

A special sliding gear controls the movement of the cog wheels. It took eleven trials in the construction process to create. Now neomatik date is the first NOMOS caliber with three crown positions. In the home position, the watch can be wound by hand (if you like); in the second position, the date can be set forwards or backwards quickly; in the third position, you can set the time. It only takes the caliber 30 minutes to change the date. The time frame in which the watch cannot be wound is 90 minutes—in other words, particularly small.

always a sucker for the NOMOS story... GLASHUTTE a town in GERMANY at least 4 or 5 watch producers I know... I bought ZELOS NOVA because it had a similar movement 7001 pesseux hand crank ... USCLASSIC dipped his hook un-catch & release...

I'll follow the story but 4 digits kinda above my safari range these days

I like the FORMEX myself. I hope you win the watch of your choice man, best of luck Whitey.
