With Easter in the rearview mirror and summer a mere speck on the horizon, we’re well into the spring season. We find ourselves in that magical time of year when the trees grow greener with the passing of each day. Some, however, don’t play along and get pinker by the day instead. Magenta buds begin to open up into light pink blossoms. This is a quintessentially Japanese phenomenon that has even made its way to Glashütte. And though NOMOS doesn’t quote this as the direct inspiration for these new Tetra watches, a more global vision of spring can undoubtedly receive some credit. What we have here is a tasteful amalgam of tones that only a brand as experienced with combining colors as NOMOS could pull off.

This quaint quartet of Tetras forces me to use a term I usually try to avoid. As overused in watch writing as the term “icon” or the phrase “pops of color,” “quirky” is usually a dirty word in my mind. But when the watches are quite literally named after quirks, it’s only suitable to dust off the term. However, for those of you not fluent in German, these will likely require some translation — “Die Unerreichbare,” “Die Wildentschlossene,” “Die Fuchsteufelswilde,” and “Die Kapriziöse.” Fret not, Fratelli, for after five years of residence on Bavarian soil, I’m equipped to explain. So, let’s take a closer look at these geometrical timepieces, their uniquely composed and positively wearable colorways, and their names.

Alpha is the hand-wound movement by NOMOS Glashütte, fine-tuned in six positions for utmost precision. The caliber draws on a reliable power reserve of up to 43 hours. The rhodium-plated surfaces of the movement are decorated by hand with the Glashütte ribbing and NOMOS perlage. Tempered blue screws represent the 175 year-old tradition of Glashütte watchmaking.

Made in Glashütte: 3.5. Statically balancing the balance

Here, the balance is driven evenly by an air current. A sensor and a laser localize the position and size of the imbalance, the device remembers the spot and mills off little or a lot of material accordingly.

Made in Glashütte: 3.6. Assembling the swan neck fine adjustment

A regulating spring in its most beautiful form, a swan neck, represents Glashütte tradition at its very finest. Polished edges, the rough outer surface, and black polishing of the surfaces require a great deal of skill, experience, and patience.

Made in Glashütte: 3.7. Assembling the rotor

The winding rotor generates energy for automatic watches. The larger and heavier it is, the easier it is to supply the movement with the energy required. However, our engineers have managed to increase the efficiency of the rotor significantly, while still keeping it thin and elegant.

Optical measurement enables us to check decisive details quickly and reliably. However, this method is not always suitable. Hand measurement is sometimes required, as milling patterns and surface reflections can influence video measurements.

Numerous tiny parts are pressed into the base plate—with an accuracy of just a few micrometers. For the assembly process, our technological specialists have come up with special devices that ensure the press-in dimensions of the individual small parts.

Here, the tempered blue NOMOS balance spring is being placed on the balance cock and gently pressed into place. Balance springs and balance cocks are sorted according to specific characteristics, which then allows us to form perfectly matching pairs—such as this one!

Made in Glashütte: 3.11. Turning out the base plate and milling the winding stem

The base plate determines the positions of almost all of the individual parts. Numerous borings, milled holes, planes, pockets, and chamfers are created in a complex machining process. When almost everything is finished, the base plate can leave its blank. The next step: drilling for the winding stem.

The sliding gear ensures that, depending on the position of the crown, you can wind the movement, quickly adjust the date in both directions, and set the exact time. The interaction must be perfect. This component demonstrates outstanding teamwork, inside and outside the movement.

Made in Glashütte: Quality Is Audible (compilation of the second season)

Jun 24, 2023

In the film footage from our workshop, you are also acoustically in the same space as our watchmakers and up close to every production step. You can hear the clinking of metal on metal, the blazing of heat, whirring of machinery, splashing of water, rustling of a starched smock, humming, drilling, pulsating, scraping, buzzing and grinding. All of these sounds go into the familiar tick-tock of a mechanical watch. And only once every production step strikes the right tone is the ticking in perfect harmony. Put your ear to your watch and listen to what otherwise cannot be heard. And stay tuned: the third season starts on April 2, 2023; follow us on the usual channels. You’ll find a compilation of the second season above.

Made in Glashütte: Work in portrait

NOMOS Glashütte

"Made in Glashütte" is the title we give to the in-depth film sequences in which we portray the work processes in our manufactory. Individual steps that are important in the manufacturing of each watch are made clearly visible in these films from the perspective of our watchmakers. The calm and concentration with which the experts carry out a multitude of precise steps make the expertise and experience tangible—the very qualities that can be found in our watches.

Made in Glashütte: Fine watchmaking by master craftspeople

NOMOS Glashütte
Jun 28, 2023

NOMOS Glashütte, as these films make tangible, represents fine watchmaking by master craftspeople. An expert hand is the fine-nerved instrument at the other end of the tweezers, whose gleaming tip often appears in the picture. It is the tactile research unit that literally grasps connections. It controls processes not only with the correct method, but also with sensitivity and tact. Machines help to accelerate quality work, to secure and stabilize it. But it is the experienced hand that directs the orchestra of levers, discs, and drills—and lets the ensemble pause when results are more precise without machinery. Because not everything is about a micrometer, power, and repeatability. Sometimes, experience and feeling are what count. It is also the skilled hand, not the machine, that seeks new solutions. The hand may err once, but it learns in the process. This hand points the way to the future.

Made in Glashütte: 4.1. Inserting the mainspring into the barrel

The mainspring stores winding energy and releases it slowly and evenly to the gear train. A small plate is welded onto the end of the mainspring in hand-wound watches to anchor it in the barrel. It ensures that the mainspring does not simply slip through. Fully wound, it won’t move.

Made in Glashütte: 4.2. Freewheeling escape wheel

The escape wheel is an important part of the NOMOS swing system. When at work in a mechanical movement, it starts and stops six times a second—or 518,400 times a day. But here, this carefully-engineered wheel is simply allowed to spin.

Small rubies enable low-friction bearing of the wheels—or more precisely, the pivots. Our machine can set the ruby to the correct position, and more importantly, in relation to the correct reference plane on the plate. Modern technology, put to good use.
