Some of you may know already that I’m a bit of a fan of Panerai. I’ve owned a 312 and a 177 and I still miss them both. It’s a brand that’s very difficult to explain; like marmite, it goes well with toast, and as you well know some people are a fan of toast, and some people are not. So, it’s not always so easy to determine what makes a watch like a Panerai so appealing, but yet it is a breeze to see why someone might think otherwise. On the basis that this is making no sense whatsoever, here’s five reasons why the new 1135 from Panerai is my favourite yet.

:hmm: Makes any one of these 8-day models from $3,900 to $8,900 seem like a bargain, even the sapphire case model.

The best I ever had"

I love watching a video that uses the terms "fancy pants" and "wrecking ball on the wrist" to compliment the watch. The "sapphires don't glow in deep beige" is funny too.

Panerai are a conundrum to me. I feel like I should like them better than I do. My favorite H2O is the Hydra and very clearly that dial is Panerai inspired. I also like cushion cased watches. But somehow none have every thrilled me to the point that I long to have one. I've looked before and none have given me that feeling.

This one is very cool, and they did a very nice job of making a complex dial still look relatively clean and very organized.

as for the comparison to an 8 day movement from Zelos being a relative bargain.... just goes to show you how watch collecting may be the ultimate example of diminishing returns.

I've never held a Zelos that can hold a candle to a Panerai from a fit and finish perspective. (That said I haven't been hands on with the halo model from Zelos) And certainly from a movement perspective 99% of Zelos' are using the standard stuff. But on the flip side the bang for your buck conversation will pretty much always go to the less expensive piece. Personally I thought about adding (or have added) many Zelos to my collection whereas I've never really seriously considered Panerai. A large percentage of that is price related but emotionally I've just been more into their designs.

And there in lies the real question: Will the $4k-9k Zelos give you that feeling when purchasing compared to the Panerai (or any other watch for that matter.) If the answer is "Yes" then that's the better watch for you, regardless of anything else.

I'm at a stage where I have an OMEGA and considering one or two other "luxury" brands and call it a day and be content with those kinds of trinkets. More expensive stuff like Grand Seiko are nice, but I enjoy my INDIE stuff just as much. I would even say they have an edge for my taste. Maybe 25 years from now Zelos may command the respect of some of the higher end stuff, but I have no illusions about what I'm buying.

For me it's not about what I'll get back if I decide to sell. It's about the here and now and what I seem to enjoy the best. Someone offers me a BREITLING and this Mirage, I'll take the LE small batch HALO model nine out of ten times.
