After dive watches, my second-favorite genre is the pilot/aviator/fleiger group. And after Seiko, Citizen is my second-favorite "affordable" brand. So you can imagine that I'm crazy about this latest addition to the collection!
What I believe Citizen does better than anyone else is to capture the vintage spirit of a timepiece while ensuring that they deliver a thoroughly contemporary timekeeping instrument. And this Avion is a perfect example of why I think so. This is the first time I've included images of the "un-boxing" process. For some reason it just seemed appropriate to do so.
Here are my pics, and comments on the details when pertinent.
I hope you enjoy.
The grand opening:
As it landed...
I also admire Citizen's packaging - not over the top, but smooth and classy...
Inside the box...
A look at the details:
The dial has all of the spirit of a fleiger, but Citizen has made sure that it's not a generic copy...
The cut-away lug design is reminiscent of watches of the 1920s/30s/40s. Not only does it look right, but it's a practical feature in easing the task of changing straps.
Citizen continues the tribute to original fleiger design with their accurate vintage copy of the pushers. But the modern, toothed crown makes for positive grip and manipulation.
The strap is superb! Not only is it thick, soft and supple, but the color and stitching are perfect complements to the overall spirit of the watch.
The Citizen caseback here is typically simple, but minimally elegant. Out of twenty-five or so Citizens, not one Eco-drive movement has ever failed me.
The lume is used sparingly, but is "Citizen-Strong"...
And On The Wrist:
Here's where this piece really shines. It is perfectly balanced and at 45mm, falls smack in the middle of my size preference. And for me, it looks beautiful from any angle...

So, there you have it, Friends... My take on the Citizen Avion. In my aviator group of watches, this one falls second only to the Steinhart Bronzo Mechanical 6497. Of course the Avion is far less than one-third the price! And even less than my DeltaT Sora, which now falls to number three. My price from Amazon: $145. + FS.
And as always... Thanks for lookin', WiTers!!!
