What this watch had been through by the time it landed on the Oris Restoration Division’s workbench, it was hard to say. All we could see was that it was scratched to bits, like it had been dragged through steel nettles. Surely this one was past rescuing – right? But then if a mechanical watch is designed to last a lifetime, perhaps the story could have a happy ending…

With restoration, the question is always there: how deep do we go? As a rule, we’ll always refurb the movement. Mechanical movements need maintenance. But what about the case? The dial? The hands? Sometimes, a light touch is best. To carry the story of the past forward. The owner of this Big Crown Pointer Date asked us to keep the patina on this watch, which was given to him by his father-in-law more than 20 years ago. Every watch tells a story. Why erase it?

It’s been a while since we made a watch remembering one of the greats of 20th century jazz. The Frank Sinatra series captured the spirit of Ol’ Blue Eyes, with Broadway-inspired dials and design standards that took us on a joyful ride beyond the mainstream. This chronograph edition had been centre stage for more than two decades when the Oris Service Division took it in – and you could tell. It was scratched, dirty and missing a few beats.
