Top Gun editions have been a staple of IWC's catalogue since 2007. Over the years, the collection has become a space of exploration for the brand - utilising advanced materials such as ceramic to push the boundaries of what it means to be a top-notch pilot's watch. Many of these designs leveraged the stealth appeal of scratch-resistant black ceramic, but through their research and development in recent years IWC has begun to incorporate a wider range of colour palettes for the dials and cases. In 2019, IWC launched the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun Edition “Mojave Desert” with a distinct sand-coloured dial and ceramic case. Today, the Schaffhausen manufacture rounds out the trilogy with two new Top Gun Edition chronographs in "Lake Tahoe White" and "Woodland Green"

The cases

Aviation watches are notoriously on the larger side, due to the emphasis on legibility that pilots require while in the cockpit. Situated between the sizing of the Big Pilot and Big Pilot 43, both Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun Editions have cases that are 44.5mm in diameter, 15.7mm thick, 53mm lug-to-lug, and 60 meters water-resistant. While we have seen manufacturers both brush and polish their ceramic cases, I personally enjoy the matte finish utilised on these Top Gun Edition chronographs. It caters more to the stealth aviator vibe of the collection, giving it a more fitting aura of youthful utility rather than traditional elegance. Of course the cases of the two watches differ in colour, but there is a more subtle difference of note to mention as well. The "Woodland Green" case utilises a matte black Ceratanium® screw-down crown and chronograph pushers, as well as a caseback made from Ceratanium® while the "Lake Tahoe White" model has these components executed in stainless steel.

The dials

The dials utilise the same familiar layout, with three registers placed at 12', 9', and 6' - conveying the elapsed minutes, elapsed hours, and running seconds respectively. All of the dial printing found on each watch is white in colour, including the hashed minute track, hour indices and arabics, register scales, as well as the IWC Schaffhausen branding and day/date indications found at the three position. And, speaking of the day date complication, I appreciate that the discs of each indicator are colour-matched to the dial. This results in a cleaner and less interrupted dial that purists will be unable to criticise.

But, circling back to the differences in approach to design, the "Lake Tahoe White" chronograph is paired with a contrasting black dial, while the "Woodland Green" skews more towards being monochromatic with a nearly all-green aesthetic. Therefore the dial really pops out on the white model, the opposing black tone clearly distinguished against the white frame of the case. This also means that the black dial has the illusion of being smaller, whereas the case-matching "Woodland Green" dial blends into the colour of the case may appear larger to the eye. As expected with a legibility-focused pilot's chronograph, SuperLuminova® is utilised on the central hands, register hands, as well as each quarter hour indices as well.

The straps

Being a 60 metre water-resistant watch, with a screw-down crown, I am glad to see IWC opted to pair each of the new chronographs with a case-matching rubber strap fit for aquatic use. The "Lake Tahoe White" is paired with an embossed white rubber strap with a folding clasp, while the "Woodland Green" finds itself well matched with a green textile inlaid rubber strap that is secured to the wrist via a pin/buckle system.

The movement

Inside the new ceramic duo of Top Gun Edition chronographs is the automatic IWC-manufactured calibre 69380, a column wheel chronograph movement that offers 46 hours of power reserve. Well industrially produced circular striping, graining, and chamfering adorns the components of the calibre. For those concerned that 46 hour of power reserve is not enough in today's marketplace, at the very least it is nice to know that the bi-directional pawl-winding system reliably and quickly builds up power.

The IWC Pilot's Chronograph TOP GUN Editions "Lake Tahoe White" and "Woodland Green" are available now for purchase. Price: $15,900 AUD

The introduction in 2019 of a sand-colored case established IWC as a pioneer in the use of ceramics in watchmaking. Now two more statement-making shades - dark green "Woodland" (Ref. IW389106) and winter white "Lake Tahoe" (Ref. IW389105) - join the IWC TOP GUN collection. Christian Knoop shares the inspiration behind these bold new additions to the IWC color palette with Justin Hast.

In 2019, IWC introduced the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN Edition “Mojave Desert”, the first TOP GUN model in sand-coloured ceramic. Today, IWC completes the collection with two new chronographs in white and green ceramic.

“These new chronographs not only underscore IWC’s longstanding and extensive experience in the fields of in-house chronographs and advanced materials. The white and green ceramic used for the cases also illustrates the current evolution of TOP GUN from a collection primarily focused on performance to a bold style statement and an expression of a distinct way of life,” highlights Christoph Grainger-Herr, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen.

“The colour codes of US Navy uniforms and the landscapes used as training grounds by naval aviators have inspired our new chronographs. In an unprecedented engineering process, we have developed two completely new ceramic colours – ‘Lake Tahoe White’ and ‘Woodland Green’ – and matched meticulously all other components of the watches to these new shades,” adds Christian Knoop, Creative Director of IWC Schaffhausen.

Lake Tahoe is located not far from Naval Air Station Fallon, home to the US Navy’s legendary TOPGUN school. Straddling the border between California and Nevada, this mountainous area is frequently used as a training ground by the pilots of the Navy Fighter Weapons School. The winter landscape around this freshwater lake as well as white US Navy uniforms have influenced the design of the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN Edition “Lake Tahoe” (Ref. IW389105). The chronograph features a 44.5-millimetre “Lake Tahoe White” ceramic case, a pitch-black dial, and black hands coated with luminescent material. The pushers and crown are made of stainless steel, the case back of titanium. The matching white rubber strap with a distinctive embossing accentuates the eye-catching design. The use of classic military colours in the TOP GUN line goes back to the Miramar models with anthracite dials and olive green straps. The flight suits of naval aviators have inspired the distinctive shade of the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN Edition “Woodland” (Ref. IW389106). The newly developed “Woodland Green” is used for the ceramic case and the dial, while the numerals and hour markers are printed in a lighter hue. The pushers and the case back are made of matte black Ceratanium®. Developed by IWC, this material combines the lightness and structural integrity of titanium with a hardness and scratch-resistance similar to ceramic. A matching green rubber strap with textile inlay completes the design.
Both timepieces are powered by the IWC-manufactured 69380 calibre, a robust and reliable chronograph with a column-wheel design. In addition, they feature soft- iron inner cases to protect their movements from the effects of magnetic fields. The front glasses are specially secured to withstand sudden drops in air pressure. Both watches are water-resistant to 6 bar and feature the iconic TOP GUN logo as an engraving on the case back. The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN Edition “Lake Tahoe” and the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN Edition “Woodland” are available through IWC boutiques, authorised retail partners or online at IWC.com. They are eligible for registration under the My IWC care program, benefiting from a 6-year extension to the standard 2-year International Limited Warranty.

colored ceramic is an interesting move for IWC, to me they have a reputation for being more reserved than their competition. White especially is "out there" for them. I suppose the current trends are less reserved right now so this is their way or moving the needle.

I prefer the older models of the pilot's chrono flieger myself.

Since 2022, IWC is having some colourful fun under the name of Colours of TOP GUN. inspired by the colours of the shirts worn underneath their flight suit, the next colour to join the ranks is Miramar! And not only does it come in full ceramic, but there's a stainless steel alternative as well!

Both watches use the tried-and-tested Pilot's Watch Chronograph 41 as a base, which means we're dealing with a 41.9mm x 15.5mm size case. The unique shade of blue also finds its way onto the dial and rubber strap, and they rely on IWC's own 69380 automatic column wheel chronograph movement.

IWC Watchmakers service the Big Pilot's Watch (IW500401)

IWC Watches
Jul 8, 2025

This Big Pilot’s Watch (Ref. IW500401) is over a decade old, and was last serviced six years ago.

Over time, the watch has developed visible scratches on the case and clasp, and several wearing parts show signs of use and require replacement. The watch has been sent to Schaffhausen for a full service.

The journey begins as IWC Technician Terézia Leu carefully disassembles all external components, preparing the watch for its meticulous restoration.

Once separated, the case is handed over to IWC Goldsmith Luka Gjon, who applies precision laser welding to fill notches and dents. He then works at the goldsmith machine to refine the case’s surfaces and edges, restoring its original contours and flawless aesthetic.

The restoration continues with IWC Polisher Anton Nujic, who revives the case surfaces by polishing the facets to a mirror-like shine. He then applies a satin finish to the flat areas, recreating the signature contrast between brushed and polished surfaces that defines the Big Pilot’s Watch.

With the case fully refurbished, IWC Technician Daniel Schuetz reassembles it with precision, ensuring every external component aligns perfectly as the watch regains its integrity.

Attention then turns to the mechanical heart of the timepiece. IWC Watchmaker Florian Salzer carefully disassembles the movement, preparing each component for cleaning, inspection, and refurbishment. Worn parts are replaced, fresh lubricants applied, and the movement meticulously rebuilt. Using a timing machine, Florian fine-tunes the watch to ensure perfect accuracy. Finally, airtightness is tested to confirm the timepiece’s readiness for years of flawless performance.

This process highlights the craftsmanship, precision, and dedication of IWC’s team, as they bring the Big Pilot’s Watch back to life for its next chapter on the wrist.

Second Best IWC I've Ever Seen: Pilots Chronograph Miramar

IWC Pilots Watch Chrono 41. This is a watch I've been eyeing for a while - then I got quite serious when I saw the Apex GP models - but THIS? The Miramar in stainless steel might take the cake for me. A new colour developed with Pantone and this is just such a specific and perfect shade of blue. Blue dial watches are often quite important for brands - representing some of the highest selling models. So getting blue right is very important. IWC got blue right. This is awesome - I am a big fan - and here's my full thoughts on this watch.
