:hmm: I think Christopher Ward offers better prices for their watches. A few of these are interesting, but the prices seem a little out of sync to me.

INTRODUCING THE FARER CARNEGIE CHRONOGRAPH SPORT

APRIL 9, 2021

WORDS BY BLAKE BUETTNER

Not content to sit on the sidelines this week, Farer has taken the lid off their latest vibrant creation, the Carnegie Chronograph Sport. The Carnegie is the last member of the Chronograph Sport family we first saw back in 2019, featuring a hand wound Sellita movement and a barrel shaped case. New with the Carnegie is a stunning selection of colors orchestrated on the dial in a way we’ve come to expect from Farer. There’s no shortage of personality here, and it might be one of the best releases we’ve seen all week.

The Carnegie is a three register chronograph that feels slightly retro in execution, but all quirky in the most Farer way possible. The base of the dial is matte teal in color with recessed sub dials done in complementary sunray blue. The bezel, which is made of ceramic, by the way, gets the same dark blue color with etched tachymeter. These cool tones are contrasted with touches of red, yellow and orange from the hands and hour markers. Not a date window in sight.

Like the other Chronograph Sport models, the Carnegie gets a 41mm steel case that measures a mere 12.9mm in thickness. We’ve seen many chronographs released from far larger brands this week that still struggle to keep thickness in check, so we applaud Farer for figuring it out at a price that clocks in under $2,000.

If the wild colors of the Carnegie aren’t your thing, Farer will also be restocking an OG colorway in the Bernina Chronograph Sport. Same great case, all white dial with red and orange accents. And finally, we hear they have something special reserved only for prior customers, the Bernina Blue, which adds a deep blue bezel to the Bernina dial, and will be limited to just 25 units.

The Chronograph Sport is priced from $1,955 on leather strap, though a steel bracelet is on offer. Farer.

Time to Race

The spirit of travel and adventure is at the heart of the Farer ethos, which is why we’re proud to have launched the Bernina CS in 2019 as the official timekeeping watch of the Bernina Gran Turismo.

BOLD IS BEAUTIFUL

The sports collection celebrates the unmistakable Farer characteristics of bold British design and contemporary aesthetics. The beautiful tri compax dial construction is the result of hours of testing, pushing at the limits of today's technology. The fresh colour combinations of the dials – in both light and dark palettes, with multiple material finishings and techniques – deliver an exacting finish and an easy-to-read display of elapsed times at speed. The creative application of Super-LumiNova Grade A across the dials adds a further dimension to their beauty at night.

DISTINCTIVE PROFILE

Machined for high-precision use, the elegant case is made of high-grade 316L stainless steel, with a polished bezel edge, circular-brushed top, horizontal-brushed sides and set against a highly-polished back. Measuring 43mm lug-to-lug and 12.9mm in height – with a dial aperture that's pushed to 31mm beneath the box cased crystal – the result is a watch with an arched silhouette that sits snugly on the wrist, whilst wearing larger in reality. The capped recessed pushers in polished 316L steel are matched by a steel crown, with a Farer bronze cap completing the sporty design.

MODERN MANUAL

Through the flat sapphire crystal case back, you’ll see a hand-wound and Swiss-made SELLITA SW510 BH Elaboré grade movement – in itself, a promise of exceptional quality and reliability. An exacting piece at just 7mm depth and with an impressive 58 hours power reserve, it's a movement built for today’s demanding use. The beautifully detailed movement also has a skeleton framework, perlé finishing, blue screws on the main plate – and has been intricately customised on the high end bridge with an engraved Farer monogram chequered sports pattern.

STORY
David Carnegie was the only UK Olympiad to have won a medal in the 1928 Winter Olympics held in St Mortiz, high in the Swiss alps at the base of the Bernina pass. Carnegie achieved a bronze medal in the skeleton. At that time the sport was called cresta, and St. Moritz had the most famous Cresta Run, dating to 1884- a naturally-formed ice skeleton toboggan track, created anew each winter.

They may be pricey, but I really like the design and the 5 year guarantee.
yeah like u G i don't pull that trigger all that much any more...but when I do...

so there is no rotor in it...i like that hand wind...yeah that's my thing when i pull them out of deep box slumber I prefer hand wind to shaking my rotor

I've gotten to handle Farer watches at the NYC Wind UP fair. I would agree with Mike's overall sentiment that CW tend to offer a similar product at a better price. But, for the finishing of the watches, which is pretty much equal, Farer do a little more work (or so they claim) to their sourced movements (this watch certainly seems to display that). They are also using more custom colorways, producing lower numbers of watches, etc. Also I've never heard a bad thing about their CS.

That said... I've never owned one. They have all always been way to small for me and when putting them on the wrist, that feeling still came through. Plus as noted they are pricey in general.

To further the comparison, CW is doing chronometers, and doing a lot of innovative things with there straps, sapphire dials, etc.

Of course when it boils down to it, like anything else. If you fall in love with the way it looks, you're probably willing to foot the bill.

I like these a lot. And at 41mm while still small probably plays similar to my Squale 50atmos. But I don't think I love them at that price.

Very handsome, with some attractive execution's. I agree with Mike on the price. Thanks for posting this up, Mike.:hat:
