Introducing Squale Periscope

Sep 22, 2022

Squale

Wanting to rely exclusively on high-grade professionals for the creation of every element of supply to their crews, Drass decided to entrust Squale with the task of creating a timepiece suitable for submarine operators, capable of meeting the technical requirements and honouring its great history of professionalism. Squale created Periscope model, made as a watch in supply to Drass employees, and not distributed commercially.

To celebrate this supply, today, in agreement with Drass, Squale has decided to market a model called Squale Periscope. All the features of the watch are the same as those of the Drass Periscope. Squale Periscope, infact, has just one difference from the one supplied to Drass, namely the dial: to underline the synergy between the two companies, it was decided to offer both the Squale logo and the Drass logo

Description

The Squale Periscope: The watch for undersea vehicles enthusiasts

The story of Drass runs parallel with mankind’s passion for exploration of our oceans. Established in 1927 in Livorno, Italy, and headquartered in what has become one of the largest seaports in both the Mediterranean and the world, Drass’s unique history and extensive achievements have kept them at the forefront of manufacturing subaqueous technology.

Synonymous with some of the most influential maritime inventions of the twentieth century—they produced some of the earliest submarines, atmospheric diving suits which would revolutionize deep-sea exploration in the 1920s and 1930s, and the legendary human “maiali” torpedoes of World War II.

Today, Drass, in addition to offering a range of totally revamped traditional vehicles, continues to produce the most advanced vehicles for elite navies around the world

All the features of the watch are the same as those of the Drass Periscope in supply to Drass, making this watch available not only to professionals, but to all undersea and military enthusiasts.

BRAND PHILOSOPHY

Integrity, professionalism, experience, and passion. To make unique, inimitable watches, elegant, minimalist design and high-tech materials are not enough… the secret of Squale watches lies within, in the way they are designed and constructed: friends of the sea, because they are immune to brine, and faithful companions of the most demanding divers, because they are reliable, always.

HISTORY

The great Swiss tradition of precision watchmaking, combined with a love of the sea and diving, were the two factors that led C. Von Büren to work exclusively on the construction of professional divers watches from the early ’50s. Initially, the “Squale” mark appeared on the cases of Swiss watches of various makes, as a sign of fine production and a quality symbol. Then, in the ’60s, Von Büren started to produce watches that also had the Squale mark on their dials, starting the brand?s institutional and commercial history. The first sporting successes, such as the world diving title won in Cuba in ’68, were linked to the names of products that had become as legendary as the medium, Master 50 atm. The ’70s saw the birth of the first “1000 meter” watch with glass on flexible mounting and snap-on lunette which could be turned in both directions. Squale continued to produce for other brands and started to supply the elite corps of a large number of armed forces, including the parachutists of Italy’s Folgore Brigade and the Italian Navy’s Diving Corps. All this has made Squale synonymous with quality and the benchmark brand for divers’ watches internationally, a status it has enjoyed for several decades.

HOW THE PRODUCT IS BUILT

The great Swiss tradition of precision watchmaking, combined with solidity and durability: as tradition demands, the case is made throughout from Swiss 316L steel. The components are all Swiss, too: winders, winder sleeves, and gaskets. These are essential parts of a watch that has to withstand high pressures and salt water. Watches are painstakingly assembled by master watchmakers, taking the greatest care over the fitting of the gaskets and ensuring that the case is airtight; this then undergoes strict checks, with regard to both resistance to water and timekeeping accuracy. Quality tests are performed on every single watch and not on a sampling basis. Last but not least, the movement’s reliability is certified by the fact that Squale has always been a direct customer of the ETA Factory at Grenchen, guaranteeing that all movements are of prime quality.

I like Squale… Wouldn’t mind having one in the collection… But not this one…
yeah... other SHARKIES light my fire @darkoverlord

where is the squale factory ?

the von buren case story is cool...case maker to big dog grail real free dive provenance

the blue one i had was real pretty ...crown @4 hassle for my fat fingers

An interesting offering
Most of you know I enjoy my Squales though I feel the 1521 case wears small. This seems to me more inline with the Miliatre case. Not sure though. Also most Squales bezels are a mm wider than the case so I’m also not sure what the bezel diameter is here. If it’s the militare case then it’s a 40mm with a 42mm bezel.

I’m presuming those are bezel covers not that the watch has an interchangeable bezel system. I wonder what purpose that’s suppose to serve besides changing the look.

I think it’s cool, esp love the minimalist bezel insert but in first look it doesn’t move me to spend over $1700.

bezel covers too fashion fussy JMHO...good luck moving -storing those- bezel condoms... like a full set of panties for my KEN DOLL PITA to move and keep track

Per Squales blurb:

The Drass company also asked Squale to make an additional device to accompany the watch. It is in fact a rubber cap, to be specially applied to the bezel of the watch. An apparently innocuous device, but one that conceals a great purpose.

In submarines, instrumentation is extremely sensitive, and any interference risks ruining the mission. An accidental collision of the watch with another metal part in the narrow spaces of the submarine would risk creating an interference signal for its sonar and radar, or worse still, accidentally revealing its position to the enemy.

Squale and Drass are back! This time they have a new collaboration that is born out of an exclusive model Squale produced for Drass in the past. Enter, the Periscope! Made to enter the riggers of underwater life, whether in the watch or in a submarine, the Periscope is built like a tank.

Thank you for watching!
