He escape valves. I have three of them

I have three watches with He escape valves. Actually two automatic ones and one older omega with a release valve.

I know that the likelihood of me every diving that deep is similar to me going into orbit or summiting Mt Everest.

I'm curious if anyone on the forums has actually been in a submersible that dove deep enough and had a need for the He release valve or escape valve on their watch.

Just curious!

I've done diving. Grew up around the sport and utility. My mom was a marine biology professor but she never went deep enough to need a Helium mixture. But she also worked in shrimp, crabs and stuff on the TX gulf coast and not deep critters. It's not a criticism of the watches. Was just curious among enthusiasts if any of us have actually, in some sort of outing, had the chance to say "thank goodness for my He escape valve! Let's head down!"

I haven't and I doubt I ever will but I do think it's a cool and unnecessary fixture.

I once saw a Lamborghini SUV and the wonder had sprujg for an option of the backseat behind the driver had a set of gauges and disks that mirrored what the driver had. That's as useless as it comes but among Lambo owners, I'm sure that if you showed up without it and the other Lambo owners had it, you were lame.

He escape valves are only needed for hyperbaric chamber decompression scenarios involving a Heliox breathing mixture in the chamber, not for the actual dive itself.

I understand! I've often thought of them as unnecessary for almost everyone but wass just curious! I grew up close to the Houston ship channel and there were these high stakes deep rig welder guys reminiscent of Ploprof whom you could imagine might see that kind of diving in their roles. Plus explorers, transatlantic cable preparers, specialized scientists and potential military people.

For me I'll just have someone ask "what's that button for?" And I'll explain it's in case I have to dive deep into the ocean where I would need a mixture of helium and oxygen. And they'll think, "you're one of those guys who would consider headphones worth thousands of dollars to provide a tiny better listening experience". And I'll think "yeah..."

High quality headphones can sometimes not only sound better, but also are more comfortable. I don't see any benefits in a trinket with a helium release valve for the majority of watch collectors. Apples and oranges IMO. One is on something that adds something beneficial to the product.

I justify all these things to my wife.

I'm the total A-hole with ZMF eikons, Grado labs reference and schitt headphone amps with vintage zeppelin albums because "they sound better"

But my kids think I'm an idiot and use their apple buds with YouTube videos!images (3).jpeg

Just a gimmick to me. I pay them zero attention other than another part to possibly fail. I don't do water with my watches anymore. If i'm at the beach and need one I throw the G Shock on or one that I can afford to have die
