🇨🇭Introducing the Swiss Auto Sion

One very sharp, mid size(44mm), automatic, three hand, in three superb executions, from Stuhrling O. A $395.00 price point here. Thanks Lee.

Claro CL888

An interesting example of a "Swiss" movement with a substantial non-Swiss content is the Claro-Semag calibre CL 888. This movement is in fact the Chinese Sea-Gull calibre ST16, refinished by Claro-Semag of Switzerland with sufficient Swiss content (by value) that it may be legally installed in watches signed "Swiss Movement".

Going one step farther, Montres Edouard Lauzieres of Switzerland re-refinish the SEMAG CL 888 and redesignate it as calibre EL-18, claiming (legally) their in-house calibre uses a genuine Swiss movement blank. Edouard Lauzieres watches fitted with the CL 888 are marked "Swiss Made" in accordance with Swiss law, despite the Chinese origins of their movements.

Cal. CL-888 was produced by Claro Watch SA (Semag). It used a Chinese Sea-Gull ST1612 ebauche but was re-manufactured in Switzerland so it could be sold as Swiss Made. Production ended in 2009 once Claro began producing Cal. VB9832. A teardown suggested that it used a Swiss-made hairspring and was refinished with a lighter finish and an extra tension spring on the indirect seconds wheel.

According to the company, “CLARO Watch SA takes new parts and then completely re-works, cleans, measures, sets and tests each part before adding our 100% Swiss-made content. The full assembly is completed, tested and calibrated in our wholly owned factory in Bellinzona.” Claro also claimed that this movement was “re-engineer(ed) an existing calibre that was readily available from the market” and that it was a “long-established calibre from the Far East that was originally developed by a Swiss group.” However, since the ST1612 is based on the Miyota 8215, this is not accurate.

Claro-Semag CL-888 Stutters

Has anyone noticed the Claro Semag CL-888 has a jittery or stuttering motion when compared with an ETA or even a 9015? Are they still considering this to be Swiss Made?

well it's very famous homage...I had a friend a while ago had a real trademark iteration...his wife loved him and they had a upper middle life in the USA...he took care of it and could not engage in watch talk and had 1 watch

very good post by RW on swiss federation nuance ...at this point wits know too much but you can not un see this stuff

I like it a lot...and I really love aventurine aka venietian glass posted which said aventurine is extremely affordable along with blue meteor and carbon is coming down

Like ScottyB said a very obvious homage to the Cartier Ballon. This though is way overpriced with the Claro, mineral(krysterna) crystal, stamped dial, 1atm or 30 feet of water resistance. Even for a dress watch that is as close to don't get it wet as possible. Decent looking homage, but with all the minuses $200 to $225 should be more in line for those that know what they're buying. Could do worse looks wise for dress, but price isn't right.
