I purchased a Ball pocket watch the other day with some engraving being done. I stumbled across this Steiny and I think I'm hooked. Steinhart is on holiday break and comes back on the seventh of January. Both stores have no up-charge for the DLC, but Gnomon actually is $28.75 less. I just have to decide on SS or DLC. They both look great, so really no bad choice IMO.

MILITARY 42 handwinding

SKU: 100-0471
Availability: In stock
During the Second World War, a growing need for military timekeepers for all kinds of different applications evolved. Thus, for example, belonged to every radio station, whether portable or stationary, a so-called radio-station's clock. Quick readability due to large digits on a clean dial where the key features of these timepieces. It is this simple but highly functional design that inspired us to re-design our Military-series, led on by the new Military 42 handwinding.
The 42 in the name stands for the case's diameter of 42mm. The classic snake hands harmonize very well with the large numbers that are only interrupted at 6 clock by the subsidiary dial for the small seconds. The domed sapphire crystal with two anti-reflective coatings on the inside allows a clear view of these components of timekeeping, that even without light remain visible, thanks to the generous use of Swiss luminous paint.

Turning the finely brushed stainless steel case of, the Military 42 handwinding around, will reveal yet another crystal. It lets one have a good view of the richly decorated ETA Unitas 6498 manual winding caliber, an extremely robust movement that fulfilled its duties in pocket watches already decades ago. A classic mechanical Swiss movement. And so the new Military 42 handwinding may have what it takes to become a classic as well, a must-have for any watch collection.

Though I'm a SS guy(prefer) the color of the hands and markers on the DLC really stand out. I think the DLC might edge out the SS version IMO.
I would be happy with either one if one or the other had sold out.

nice STEINNY UNITAS HAND CRANK 6498 nicely decorated perlage pilot...price pretty good...a code would put it in range

I have the NFW Shumate Diver in DLC. 7 years of wearing it in wilderness SAR and not a scratch on the case.

The Ball Secometer or did you find another?
It was this one yes ...

They had a BALL WACO watch using the Unitas 6497 (sub-dial at nine o' clock), but couldn't justify the price (Pre-order Price: US$2,099). One more reason the Steinhart military was so enticing.

INGENIOUS ANTI-MAGNETIC PROTECTION.

Durable protection is mandatory to ensure precise timekeeping no matter the environment and the invisible magnetism is one of the key threats to overall precision. Our hinged case back is equipped with a special anti-magnetic shield delivers astonishing protection to 1,000 Gauss (80,000 A/m). Made of mu-metal – an alloy comprised of nickel, iron, copper and molybdenum – this shield attracts and deviates static and low-frequency magnetic field lines.

Very happy with my Zeno hand cranker at 40mm.

By the way for those of you who like >50mm Zeno has many like this 65mm

and many other unique designs

some look like Invicta designs for example

- surprised by how many they have.

Apples and oranges. A Ball is in another world compared to the fit and finish of the ZENO. Buy what you like and can afford, regardless.

STEINNY MIL UNITAS nice IMHO.. price just a little too stiff for me...20% coupon would be nice...no up charge for DIAMOND-LIKE-CARBON puts it in the running

If it had an open case back I would have bought that one right away. As is, once they dropped it to 699, I keep going back and considering it.

I feel the same way about Ocean Crawler. There isn't a coupon large enough to make them attractive for me. Their pricing structure hinges on the obscene and is kind of a joke for the usual movements everyone else is using. I just don't see anything special in separation to merit the prices.

I'm not a Steiny flag waver, I may own two I think. They also are not priced in the clouds compared to some other stuff.
