I was reading this sub-forum and found a fellow member suggesting a chat box (https://watchintyme.com/showthread.php?67661-Chat-Box)

An alternative to an on-site chatbox would be a Discord server. Chatting on Discord is pretty easy, and sub-chatrooms can be created. A lot of gaming & political communities use Discord. Additionally, Reddit watch sub-reddit has a Discord server. What do you guys think?

Not personally into certain discussions on a forum where all I want to really talk is watches. The less I know about everyone the more I like them. I prefer to keep things like politics out of a forum based on watches. Just leads to the same old heated crap. We can already discuss movies, cars, music, sports weather, weird animals and all the basics in the off topic or PM each other. Yet if others are game go for it, just not something I'd have interest in playing on. Yet I'm all for people having choices and if that's something people would be into hope it can be done for them.

I meant some political communities use Discord for their internal chats. NOT that We would use it for politics. That would not be what I was suggesting!!

Not really my only point. I'm not inot into facebook, instagram or especially reddittt for persoanl reasons. Like I said for me the more people express themselves on the net without a filter the less I like them. I have friends I no longer speak to, family members I no longer want to talk to all for expressing crap they would never say in a actual one on one setting. Found out how racist some of my friends and relatives are because how safe they feel behind a keyboard. Also are willing to put info out there that exposes their true selves I never knew. Now for me that is why I don't like or want to participate in such things. That said I'm all for people having choices and if wanting extra choices here is what people want and it's what the owner and the mods think would be good for the community I'm all for that. It's not for me but that was just expressed why I wouldn't have interest. But I'm just one person , I don't speak for the mass, and I in no way know for certain how things would go in such a setting just voicing my concerns or my likes and dislikes about the idea. Like I said if it can be done and people want a chat box have fun and hope it can happen for those that would like to have such an option.

I don't break friendships because some online crap (though people have de-friended me for it, I don't stoop to that level). If I have an issue with someone, I talk it out one-on-one. If someone has an issue with me, I am always open to in-person conversations. I do not shun someone because of their political opinions expressed online. My door is always open for dialogue, and even if I must denounce someone's view online, I still allow them to explain themselves to me one-on-one and I am usually trusting. That's the way I am. I know many others don't behave like that, but I cannot change what I'm like

I was the one that started that thread about a CB...

George...I agree and disagree with you...some chats do turn into a mess...it depends on the people...I feel this group here would not fall into the abyss...you share what you want to...or do not participate at all...

I for one enjoy talking real time with friends, not all the time, but a quick discourse about what's happening can be fun...

Rapid responses and PM's do work well here. :dunno:

It all works Bunda...when you know someone is online it's fun to chat...a PM is for private convos...

Responses to a thread are not quite the same...be that as it may...I will let this die as it did before...

I'm new blood here, but there's old blood in my viens...LOL

I think the pasta fell off the wall a while back...:)

Discord chat would actually be better as a chat room for WiT, IMO. I'm on a gaming channel in Discord, and it forbids political posts and porn. There is an auto moderation and live mods can be used too.

I'm looking into this options for those that would like to use it.

No Porn???

Thanks Steve...

I think any fears of NPC or stupid stuff are missplaced...this krewe is a good bunch...so whatever you decide is OK by me.

I think it's worth a try, since it's free and the only real effort is to set up an account, then add an invite here. I'm not sure how useful it would be, but for the less than 30 minutes of set up, it shouldn't be that futile.

Ok, we have setup a Discord chat feature.

I recommend you register with your WatchinTyme user name when you open the chat feature.

This is in a testing stage, so try it out, have fun and let me know what you think.

Discord knows what programs you have open because that's how it's programmed to work. However, the program does not do a good job of communicating this feature to users.

For those of you who haven't used Discord before, the program's ability to discern other programs you're using. Whenever you load up a game, Discord will recognize it immediately, even if you haven't given it permission to access your Blizzard or Steam accounts. By default, it even shares what game you're playing with your Discord friends list. You can disable these notifications, but you can't stop the program from keeping a list of every game you play while it's open.

To be perfectly honest, I initially dismissed this complaint as a simple case of a user who neglected to read a program's Terms of Service. You know the Terms of Service — that Russian-novel-length wall of text that serves no purpose except getting between you and your brand-new program. But the truth of the matter is that the Terms of Service part often contains important information about the permissions and privileges a program requires in order to run.

Discord doesn't actually show you its Terms of Service before it installs. In fact, the text containing the Terms of Service isn't in the program at all. If you search for it, Discord will link you to its website, where you can read both the Terms of Service and the Privacy Policy. Neither one is that long, so if you use the program extensively, you might consider taking 20 minutes or so to read through them.

What information do you share?
The Privacy Policy is fairly explicit about what kinds of information Discord collects:

"When you interact with us through the Services, we receive and store certain information such as an IP address, device ID, and your activities within the Services. We may store such information or such information may be included in databases owned and maintained by affiliates, agents or service providers.

"[Information about user demographics] may be compiled and analyzed on an aggregate basis, and we may share this aggregate data with our affiliates, agents and business partners. We may also disclose aggregated user statistics in order to describe our services to current and prospective business partners, and to other third parties for other lawful purposes.

"As we develop our business, we might sell or buy businesses or assets. In the event of a corporate sale, merger, reorganization, bankruptcy, dissolution or similar event, your information may be part of the transferred assets."

Interestingly, Discord does not specify whether it collects data based on the games you play, explaining only that "nformation we collect may include but not be limited to username, email address, and any messages, images, transient VOIP data … or other content you send via the chat feature."

Discord's defense
Does this mean that Discord is gathering up your personal information, ready to sell it to advertisers to stay afloat, like Facebook, Twitter or Google? Not necessarily. I'm not the first person to notice that the Discord privacy policy seems vague on the topic of collecting, aggregating and potentially selling data. A user called KatsuoRyuu on Reddit pointed out the same thing about a year ago.

KatsuoRyuu received a response from Shuu37, a graphic designer who works for Discord:

"We don't sell any of your information," Shuu37 wrote. "In terms of money, we are investor backed. We also have some monetization strategies in the works." Discord Nitro launched just around the time of their exchange, and Discord still plans to sell some cosmetic upgrades to keep its servers up and running.

From my point of view, if Shuu37's statement is in any way false or misleading, the company would be shooting itself in the foot by putting such a thing in writing, especially in a semiofficial capacity. Of course, all bets are off if Discord sells or merges its assets (see above), but for the moment, if Discord is gathering information on the games you play, the company is keeping that data to itself.

Discordant notes
"Out of discord comes the fairest harmony," said Heraclitus of Ephesus, an early Greek philosopher. And perhaps he had a point. Discord is hardly the first program to offer a convenient service in exchange for a few inconvenient permissions.

Yes, Discord can track the games you play, whether or not you want it to. No, Discord doesn't give you fair warning about this feature when you first install the program. But you can keep your game habits hidden from your friends, and if Discord is collecting information about the titles you're playing, it's not doing anything untoward with that information — for now.

In short, there's no real solution in this situation, but there may not be a real problem, either. Like a lot of security issues, Discord's permissions are just something with which users should familiarize themselves, then come to their own conclusions.

Check the bottom right of your screen. Tiny little blue circle with something inside of it. Not sure what it is supposed to be, so we will call it a thing.
