    C60 Sapphire

    $920 - $1,020
Can you improve on a watch that’s as universally loved as the Trident 3? You can certainly put a new – and alluring – spin on it. The C60 Sapphire takes the handsome robustness of the Trident – and adds something special: a see-through dial made from sapphire crystal that’s just 0.6mm thick. This lets you see the mechanics of the Sellita SW200 movement. And reminds you that artistry can be found everywhere. Even 600m underwater.

    • Description

There are 20 steps and over 80 operations to make the see-through sapphire dial of the new C60 Sapphire. A procedure that delivers a material that’s not only beautiful and scratch-resistant but also incredibly thin (0.6mm thickness). Using lab-grown sapphire on the dial not only lets you see the workings of the movement but gives you a flash of colour every time you look at the watch.

But this is not a timepiece that trades only on its looks.

A professional diving watch, the case is made of 316L stainless steel and engineered for water resistance of 600m. The indexes are filled with Super-LumiNova® Grade X1 GL C1 so you can check the time no matter how dark (or wet) it is. And thanks to the watch’s 40mm width, it’ll sit happily on every size of wrist.

The back of the watch is every bit as mesmerising as the front. Turn it over, and you’ll see the bespoke Sellita SW200 movement ticking away through the sapphire caseback. A movement that’s not only accurate and reliable but delivers a 38-hour power reserve when the watch is taken off.
    • Movement

A Swiss-made automatic calibre widely used throughout the horological industry, the SW200-1 is a byword for robustness and reliability. Its anti-shock system will protect its inner workings during all manner of activities and impacts - think entering the water before a dive and more - while its 4Hz frequency also ensures a smooth 8 ticks per second, above the water and below.

No liking the Blued CB but the case shape to lug design is quite cool. Tanks Mike! The L2L spec is probably just as important to smaller wristed folks like me, as the case size.

its a nice piece in the details but falls short for me personally. I feel like the sapphire dial would lose its cool factor after a while.

The C60 Sapphire has been our most successful launch yet. While the design, profile and build quality are second-to-none, it’s the see-through sapphire dial that’s made the watch a phenomenon.

But what is sapphire? And how – and why – have we used it on a dial?

Here, Christopher Ward CEO and co-founder Mike France, and head of product design Adrian Buchmann take you through the secrets of the dial’s production process.
          Why choose Sapphire?
          Mike France:
Because it’s beautiful. And because it’s difficult to achieve and we love a challenge at Christopher Ward.

It requires 84 separate precision operations to produce the C60 Sapphire’s dial which is why, I imagine, it’s so rare in watchmaking."
          Durability and fragility
Mike France: “It’s strange that something as hard as sapphire – you could attack it with a screwdriver and wouldn’t be able to scratch it – is extremely brittle when you machine it.”

Adrian Buchmann: “Just like stone dials, sapphire is easy to damage during production. Every time you put it under stress, something can go wrong and it gets rejected. But we knew we could overcome that.”
          In search of ultimate thinness
Adrian Buchmann: “The sapphire is grown in labs as a ‘pillar’ that you slice across into little discs. Then you have to flatten the discs, drill little holes in them, and polish and machine them with three to five microns of tolerance. The result is a pure sapphire dial that’s just 0.6mm in thickness.
Additionally, it’ll look unblemished for longer than any other dial material."
          We can see clearly now...
          Mike France: “
Early pre-production samples were ok but didn’t offer the level of transparency we were after. They were rejected.

I remember the tension when what would have to be the final set of samples, if we were to hit our on-sale date, were revealed – followed by the excitement when it was obvious our technical team had achieved the “impossible” – again!

          Adrian Buchmann: "
The dial is in two pieces: the clear sapphire itself and the coloured polycarbonate wafer just beneath it, which adds the glorious blue colour."
          Sapphire: here to stay
Adrian Buchmann: “The reaction to the watch has been so fantastic, we’ll definitely use sapphire again. Watch this space.”
