INTRO[/u]
As one of my favorite brands I'm always on the lookout for the next Oris for my collection. Since its founding in 1904 in Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland, Oris Watch Company has built its reputation as a skilled manufacturer of mechanical luxury timepieces. Among their collections, they are well known for their divers watches with the hallmark "donut" style case. The TT1 case design is perhaps the most iconic of their divers watches and has been followed by the Aquis series in 2011.
The "Regulateur" dial arrangement is something that Oris has become known for. What is different about the "Regulateur" is that the minute hand literally becomes the center of attention. The hour hand is placed in a separate subsidiary dial to allow separation of the two and highlight the importance of the minute scale on a divers instrument. Interestingly the "Regulateur" concept was originally devised in the 17th century as a device to check the precision of other timepieces by way of its clearly legible minute hand.
First introduced in 1995, the TT1 "Der Meistertaucher" was the first of the Oris Divers Regulateurs and earned its German "Master Diver" moniker thanks to being officially tested and certified by the German Federal Army.
Ever since I first saw it on the various watch forums I always envisioned obtaining a TT1 Der Meistertaucher. Thanks to a recent lucky pre-owned find this titanium beauty joins my growing Oris collection.
PACKAGING[/u]
For the Der Meistertaucher, Oris chose to provide a kit including a nice zippered nylon carrying case, a divers torch, interchangeable rubber strap, tools, and extra screws. Also included is a manual describing its official certifications as well as a large fold out map entitled "The First Oris Meistertaucher Map of Switzerland".
CASE
As I mentioned above this Der Meistertaucher is designed around the iconic TT1 donut style divers case. The 44mm case is composed entirely of titanium with a 1000 meter depth rating and a black/red "Coke" unidirectional rotating divers bezel. It features flared out rounded sides and wide curved lugs and is finished in brushed and mirror polished surfaces. The main screw down crown is located at the 4 o-clock position and there is a helium release valve at the 2 o'clock position that is highlighted by an orange dot. The watch has a sapphire front crystal and a solid screwed down case back featuring the Oris logo.
DIAL
The TT1 Der Meistertaucher has been produced in a variety of configurations over the years in both 44mm and 47mm case sizes. Newer versions of the Der Meistertaucher feature a wave pattern textured dial background as well as revised applied hour markers.
MOVEMENT
The movement powering this timepiece is the Oris 649 automatic movement which is a custom modified regulateur configuration of the ETA 2836-2. The 27 jewel movement operates at 28,800 vph with Incabloc shock protection and a 38 hour power reserve. It is a hacking movement featuring subsidiary subdials for the hour and seconds as well as a calendar date.
BRACELET & STRAP[/u]
Oris is well known for their thick custom multilink divers bracelets and on the Der Meistertaucher it is 100% titanium with polished outer links and brushed inner links. It ends in a pushbutton locking divers clasp w/ wetsuit extension. I will note that due to Oris' proprietary lug spacing at the case, standard aftermarket bracelets are not compatible.
The rubber strap included with the kit is also very thick but requires being "cut" to size. This, of course, would limit resale and requires you to be extremely cautious when sizing it initially. I would have preferred an adjustable strap instead.
LUME
The Der Meistertaucher is equipped with a healthy amount of super luminova luminous compound at the hour markers, hands, subdials, and bezel pearl that glows green.
COMPARISON
Here are some side by side photos of the TT1 Der Meistertaucher with the newest 46mm Oris Tubbataha Reef Limited Editon Aquis Titanium Regulateur. The Tubbataha edition is powered by the Oris 749 movement and has a slightly different subdial arrangement due to its underlying Sellita SW220 base.
The lume on the Tubbataha benefits by being two tone with the minute hand and main outer markers in orange and the sundials in green.
Next up is a side by side with the Invicta Scooby SW500. The Scooby clearly pays homage to the Oris in not only the case shape but also the bezel and bracelet design. The Invicta has a much more prominent dial texture and subdial rings. It is powered by the Sellita SW500 automatic chronograph movement and is highly respected among Invicta enthusiasts.
When compared in low light while they both glow green, the superluminova of the Oris is clearly brighter than the Tritinite on the Invicta. Also Invicta has chosen to only illuminate the subdial hands without any of the subdial markers.
CONCLUSION[/u]
Overall, as the first diver's regulateur by Oris this TT1 Der Meistertaucher should be on the short list of any Oris enthusiasts collection. At 44mm in diameter it qualifies as a "midsize" watch but I find that because of the "donut" shape of the case the actual dial and bezel appear visually smaller. This, combined with the lightweight titanium construction, make the TT1 Der Meistertaucher a supremely comfortable midsize daily diver.
Thanks for looking!
