Discovered by Marie and Pierre Curie in 1898, the element radium was thought to be a miracle substance that could change the world. But little was known about the effects of long-term exposure to radium when thousands of women were employed painting luminous paint made with radium on clock and instrument dials.

Thanks for posting this up, Mike.:hat:

THE RADIUM GIRLS is one of the more fascinating though morbid footnotes to horological history.

The " girls " were encouraged to constantly lick that paint brush to maintain a fine point for crisp arabic numbers on the airplane dials.

The " girls " would paint their lips so they would glow for a night out with boyfriends.

I drove by the location while I was up in the Oranges making deliveries. No trace of the horror factory that once stood there.

I saw a movie about this a little while back. Really interesting and sad. These are the roots of Panerai and Rolex.

Yea sad story all around. One of many like it over the years and going on now but that's a whole other soap box

I imagine it was easy to find their lips to kiss in the dark, and the glowing tongue for the win!

:lol:Glowing tongue and lips. :hmm: You really scored big time. It won't be long before your jaw turns to mush too from the toxic foreplay.

They might have been able to go on tour like the Blue Man Group and do stage shows.
