Oris

From Hölstein, with love

Oris was founded 116 years ago. As anniversaries go, it’s not exactly a big one (although it has been a while), but we’re proud of our roots and that after all these years we’re still the independent Swiss watch company doing what the founders set out to do – create beautiful watches that last a lifetime and make people smile. We’ve also been based on the same site all these years, here in the beautiful Swiss village of Hölstein. To mark the date and the place we still call home, we’re releasing the Oris Hölstein Edition 2020, an all-bronze watch limited to 250 numbered pieces. And the song? It’s called ‘1904’ in honour of our founding year, and performed by our friend James Gruntz, the Swiss singer-songwriter who recorded it for the occasion. Thank you, James! We hope the watch and the song make you smile.

THE ORIS HÖLSTEIN EDITION 2020 – BRONZE LE CHRONOGRAPH
BY PATRICK GILBERTSON 15TH JUNE 2020

Today, Oris unveiled their latest special edition watch: the Divers 65 Hölstein Edition, in celebration of the Swiss village that has been home to the company since their birth in 1904. The Oris name itself was inspired by that of a local creek in Hölstein, as well as the watchmaker being the largest employer in the region for a great deal of the early twentieth century. In an industry full of manufactured heritage, with brands grasping for any historical associations that they can, it’s refreshing to see a brand celebrate a true historical foundation.

The Oris Hölstein Edition features the same dial lay-out, 43mm case, and bracelet you would find on a regular divers 65 Chronograph in steel, however this celebratory release features a full bronze case, crown, bezel, bezel insert, and in an industry first, a full bronze bracelet. The combination of an all-bronze case and bracelet, and the gold-plated dial, rose gold painted indices, and black subdials makes for a striking and attractive overall package. Again, in keeping with the steel model, the Hölstein Edition is powered by the Oris caliber 771 movement that’s based on the Sellita SW510. Oris fans will be relieved to see the use of a gold plated dial, over a bronze one, as the difference between the dial and bezel (once oxidised/patinaed) will be far more aesthetically pleasing, rather than having a faded dark-bronze case, and a shiny new bronze dial right next to each other, as is the case on the Big Crown Bronze Pointer Date that Adrian reviewed earlier this year.

It could be argued that there are a number of reasons that a full bronze watch bracelet has never been produced before; bronze is far softer than steel meaning Oris have had to integrate steel screw pins between each bronze link, as well as a traditional milled steel clasp. The second issue with bronze, as a material in constant contact with the wearer’s skin, is that the salts in sweat or seawater can cause the material to oxidise faster, causing green patches on their wearer’s skin. Oris have opted for a steel caseback in order to minimise this issue. When questioned on the topic, Oris Co-CEO Rolf Struder maintained that it won’t be an issue with customers claiming: ‘We’ve been working with bronze for years and our customers know what bronze is, and will be aware that if they have a watch with a bronze bracelet, they may get oxidation on their skin. But then you have a shower and it’s gone again.’ On the topic of patina, you can expect this Divers 65 Chronograph to dull, and turn a darker shade over the first few months of ownership, especially if taken for a swim. However, a brief dip and a gentle scrub with a little lemon juice, followed by a rinse and thorough drying will see the bronze surfaces return to a brighter finish, similar to that of when it first left the factory.
