The US Postal Service on Tuesday unveiled a modern replacement for the iconic Grumman LLV mail truck that has been in use since the late 1980s. The new design consists of a waste-high front hood that resembles the front beak of a duck in front of an extra-high windshield. Oshkosh Defense has been contracted to build between 50,000 and 165,000 of the new trucks over the next 10 years — replacing vehicles that have been in service for as long as three decades, USPS said in a statement. Oshkosh’s design is not completely finalized, USPS said. The initial order of trucks will cost $482 million, with the first vehicles expected to hit the roads in 2023. The truck revamp is part of the Postal Service’s self-stated “plan” to become “the preferred delivery service provider for the American public.”

It was a day of blistering heat in Southern California, and now the family of mail carrier Peggy Frank, 63, wants to know whether she was killed by extreme temperatures while on the job. Frank was found dead in her mail truck in Los Angeles earlier this month. The temperature outside was a record 117 degrees. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the employee's family at this difficult time,” the U.S. Postal Service told Inside Edition. “The unfortunate incident involving this employee remains under investigation.”

Marcos Perez made his final deliveries for the United States Postal Service on Monday after delivering thousands of letters and packages and getting to know the community along his route for almost three decades.

I remember these death traps...LOL...true story from long ago...a buddy rolled one over on it's side (terrible wheel base...an accident waiting to happen if you drove over 40 MPH)...wasn't hurt...gathered himself and the mail...flipped it back on the wheels and finished his route...

Those WERE the dayz...LOL

I worked in them for quite a few years when I first started. If I got stuck in the snow I could easily push myself out. Most had no fans, crappy heat, and nowadays would be useless with all the packages. Easy to break into as the locks sucked. They were at least roomier then the Ford Pinto wagons they were also using for awhile.
