Well, that is what it felt like I guess. It hurt like a sum'bitch! I had a 9mm stone in my right kidney. Had surgery, some sort of laser to bust it up. Now I have a stent thing in my kidney, which will have to be removed (without me being knocked out? ugh..) and not looking forward to that party!

I am thankful I got into the hospital. All this news about hospitals being swamped and overcrowded with covid cases had me worried I might not even get into it.

Big shout out to the LAFD paramedics, and the nurses and doctors at Northridge Hospital Medical Center. They all were such kind and caring professionals.

I didn't get any sleep for 3 days nor eat or drink water for 2 days but I am home now and starting to feel much better.

The rumor is that a kidney stone hurts the same or more as childbirth for a woman. If that is so, I cannot imagine any woman ever wanting a second child voluntarily!

I had one about the same size a few years ago and they knocked me out and went in after it. The doctor had a long talk with me afterwards about adjusting my diet. You’ll bounce back.

Yikes! Glad to hear you're on the mend. I had one, and docs couldn't figure it out, and just sent me home. I finally passed it on my own, ker-plunk. Didn't know pain like that was possible. Not fun.

Be well soon!

I had the stent removed yesterday around Noon time. The procedure itself was not as bad as I expected it would be. But later, it brought the severe pain again! Almost as bad as the stone itself. 8.5 on a scale of 10.

For anyone who has had this done and had a stent removed, is this normal? And how long can I expect the severe pain to last?

From what I've read some pain seems normal Tom. Best of luck man.

What can I expect after removal of the stent? You may have bloody urine, possibly with some small clots. You may also have “achy” pain due to ureteral spasms. This generally only last a few hours, but should resolve over the next 2-3 days.

Symptoms after removal of ureteral stents

Our series suggests that two of three individuals who undergo ureteral stent removal experience symptoms thereafter. Individuals undergoing stone basket extraction and those who experienced stent discomfort were more likely to have pain after stent removal. Anticholinergic use and stents indwelling for a longer time were associated with less pain after stent removal.

I had a good discussion with my urologist about this. Short version, the pain will come and go for a couple of weeks.

The long version, is that because the 9mm stone was bashed to pieces inside the kidney, most of it was taken out but there is always some debris, sand like, left behind that will start to pass down the urethra and when a grain of it does, it's gonna hurt. He told me to just stay on top of my pai meds, don't wait until it is severe before I pop a pain pill. Take it as soon as it becomes moderate to help it take effect before the pain becomes severe.

I was pain free from last night, thru today. Thought I was over and done with it. Nope. Came back again tonight. Another grain travelling down the Pee Pee Highway. At least I know why now, and that has set my mind at ease.

BTW, I was informed I have a 5.5mm stone in my left kidney. Will it get it bigger? Will it move down and then I need another surgery? No one knows. Only time and the Lord knows. I hope it never moves. But if it does, I hope it waits a couple years at least!
