Seiko also enjoying its golden era that decade

Words and photos by Matt Troch

The 1960s have been characterized as the golden era for many things, from Dean Martin and Sinatra to vintage Ferrari, with Seiko also enjoying its golden era that decade. One should look no further than the watches produced under the Seikomatic branding to justify the aforementioned statement, with my personal favourite being the Seikomatic Weekdater 6206-8990. The case size is quite large for a watch from the 60s measuring at 37.25mm which, however, compensates for today’s tendency towards larger watches and with a lug width of 19mm, it is easy change through leather and nato straps to mix it up, and transform it from a dress watch to a more sporty option for every day wear.

The movement of the watch is very Seiko, primarily because it is very reliable and in the off-chance that something happens and it needs service, parts and experts are easy and cheap to find. The movement powering this Japanese masterpiece is the Automatic 26J, Seiko Calibre 6206A which if tuned properly can be regulated for outstanding COSC results. Their design is reminiscent of modern day Grand Seiko, with beautifully polished hour markers and sharp hands and an amazing silver dial with sunburst characteristics. That’s why these watches are often referred to, and justifiably so, as mini Grand Seikos.
