Fratello's Mike Stockton and Gerard Nijenbrinks go hands-on with the Aquastar Deepstar Re-Edition. A beautiful new re-edition of the famous and sought-after Aquastar Deepstar watch.

OCTOBER 09, 2020

The Aquastar Deepstar

If you’re a vintage watch fan, then you almost certainly know of the Aquastar Deepstar and the brand itself. Aquastar was founded in 1962 by one Frédéric Robert in Geneva. It turns out that Robert was quite the dabbler and did so in everything from sailing to mathematics. With Aquastar, he envisioned the brand as the ultimate tool for divers and sailors. As a result, his watches received numerous patents related to features like the internal rotating bezel (on the Model 63 above, which we reviewed) and a unique decompression bezel.

From the progenitor of the modern tool watch, the Synchron Group is proud to present Aquastar: the last great story in dive watches. And with the rebirth of this iconic, hugely influential brand, the year’s most long-awaited revival: the 2020 Deepstar Chronograph Re-Edition.

But the return of the Deepstar represents more than just the re-telling of the watch world’s best-kept secret. The Aquastar brand, and its enigmatic, innovative founder Frederic Robert shaped a pivotal moment in mechanical watch history throughout the sixties and seventies – one that represented a conscious shift from wrist watches as timekeeping devices, to purpose-built tools designed for very specific fields, like diving and exploration. In 2020, Robert's original vision dives again with the new Deepstar Re-Edition, a modern, yet strikingly faithful adaptation of Aquastar’s most emblematic dive watch from 1962.

The 2020 Aquastar Deepstar is a faithful recreation of one of the most influential dive watches of the 60s. The unique and uncluttered mono sub counter dial, combined with the small running indicator, and the patented multiple dive decompression bezel table make the Deepstar an unmatched diver-oriented tool with an instantly recognizable design.

The 2020 Deepstar retains all proportions of the original Deepstar from the 60s while relying on high-end Swiss Manufacture automatic movement, custom manufactured for the Deepstar by La Joux-Perret, and like its predecessor the Valjoux 23, the new Deepstar movement is equipped with column wheel operated pushers. This gives the new Deepstar not only the practicality and versatility but also the refinement you expect from a modern Chronograph.

Was not expecting this and just casually checking Dive Watches. A diver chrono with Horology Heritage. Giving this consideration, tanks Mike for HU. The Blue dial has
my attention.
L 2 L is 49-51mm so is doable on my wrist.

WCU #40: Aquastar Deepstar: The Next Doxa?

•Oct 16, 2020

On the wrists of Jacques Cousteau and Jacques Mayol, the Aquastar Deepstar became a legend of diving in the 1960s. With its diving chronograph and an innovative bezel for timing the waiting time between dives, it showed itself to be an invaluable tool. In 2020, it has been relaunched by the minds behind the modern Doxa SUB. What does this new watch show about the market and does it pose a challenge to the Doxa SUB?

The focal point for me is also my interest in Fortis 300/ 38 with Lemania 5100
movement. I think why this Aquastar is singing to me.
I missed this the first time around. This is singing to me as well. I really like this dial amongst it's stats!
