I think it was just before the site temporarily went down and came back that I posted my Certified, Eyal signed First Edition (0001) Superman automatic watch.
I didn’t see the post return, after the big repair (thank you Steve and the whole team for your hard work on this site!), so maybe it is pending out there in the ether somewhere, or I just missed seeing it, but, one question I’d mused about, in that post, was wondering what model served as the basis for it, in terms of design. Wasn't ever sure if anyone offered insights to that inquiry.
But, still wondering, I was poking around various sites with Invicta models, and my thought now is that, based on the bracelet and canteen style crown protector, I do believe it is based within the Coalition Forces series, although I couldn’t find an exact model (and perhaps there isn't one).
But, I liked the look of this one, as a similar form, just for some similar design elements...
And, since I liked how the Superman wears and feels, and since as a certified First Edition watch, I probably won’t want to wear it too much so as not to beat it up, it made sense to get this one.
Case size for both is listed at 52mm, but lug to lug is a full 7mm difference, so the Superman, at 55mm, sits better than the 62mm Coalition Forces one here, so it’ll be among my lesser worn big bruiser watches, saved for days when I want a bolder boulder on my wrist. Unlike the Grand Octane, or, to some degree, the Hydromax, however, it still wears well, despite being so oversized. The lug ends are just at the edges of my wrist and so the bracelet drops down nicely. We can compare them here....
A lot more architecture on the Coalition Forces model, but, as I say, it did wind up wearing comfortably.
What immediately caught my eye were the yellow highlights on a blue dial. You get an internal rotating bezel here (crown to the left controls it) and, being on the budget side, it’s not a locking crown, but even so, it’s a nifty feature, and the yellowed 15 minute portion really pops (although, under the close up, the finishing is sloppy). Seconds hand and also the 24 hour subdial hand are both bright yellow as well.
Invicta claims to be “invincible in detail” and, honestly, while the invincibility part is a bit of a stretch, haha, I do enjoy the details they put into their watches. On this one, the raised ball bearing accents (kind of an industrial/apocalyptic doomsday-type armor feeling) are evidenced throughout, even nodded to somewhat, one could say, with the knurling on the bracelet, but showing up prominently on the crown, the outer bezel, and even suggested on the 24 hour subdial.
The mix of finishes is pleasing to the eye, and I love the addition of the blued screws on the bezel, that match the dial color.
The Miyota quartz gives a 24 hour subdial, a date dial, and a retrograde day – a feature I’ve always loved, and, here, it almost looks like a speedometer parked down there.
Thanks to the larger case size, the date subdial is actually pretty legible here.
An added bonus for day/date adjustment is that crown rotation will change both the day, and the date, much like an NH36, so it’s not one of those where you have to cycle through all seven days of the week for adjustment.
Applied indices, prominent, skeletonized hands tipped with bold pointers, Flame Fusion and 100m WR. Very hefty, solid link bracelet, solid end links of course, and a machined clasp. Feels like a tank, on the wrist, and I like that.
Lume??? LOL, pitiful as always, with the Tritnite not trying very hard at all, but, hey, Invicta, right?!
Considering I picked it up for next to nothing, I have zero complaints on this one. It’s big and bold yet still comfortable to wear, and is probably one of the best I’ve bought for being almost too big, yet not, haha. I mean, for me, anyway. And, as I say, considering that the Superman First Edition will be worn infrequently and gingerly, this is a great beater of a beast in a pleasing colorway.
Thanks all for reading!
Keep on watching!
