Seiko Prospex PADI 200M Automatic Sumo

In the pursuit of further connecting with dive professionals, Seiko announced their partnership with PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors), the world’s largest diving network with more than 136,000 individual PADI professionals who have issued 25 million certificates around the world. To celebrate this historic partnership, Seiko established a special range of dive watches under the Prospex line distinguished by blue and red colours, with the PADI logo etched on the dial.

Seiko watches are renowned for having quirky unofficial nicknames bestowed by Seiko fans themselves, perhaps representing a testament to the brand’s immense following. The nickname “Sumo” stems from a release from Seiko back in 2007 that bears numerous design cues resembling Japanese Sumo wrestlers. Seiko unveiled their latest PADI variant of the acclaimed Sumo model with a refreshing new visual style and compelling upgrades.

Iconic Sumo Case Design

One of the key traits that contributed to the nickname “Sumo” lies in its substantial 45mm case, a reference to a Sumo’s large body build. Similarly, the Seiko Prospex 200M Automatic PADI Sumo Ref. SBDC121 carries a 316L stainless steel case diameter of 45mm with a case height of 12.9mm and a lug to lug distance of 52.6mm. This would be a piece you would definitely feel on the wrist, exhibiting a bold and pronounced wrist presence - as dauntless as a Japanese heavyweight Sumo wrestler.

As expected from Seiko, the finishes on the Prospex 200M Automatic PADI Sumo Ref. SBDC121 demonstrates great attention to detail with a satin brushed finish on the top of the lugs and a defined mirror-like polish at the side of the case. With additional polished touches above the brushed lugs, the mix of precise finishes is blended harmoniously to create an incredibly sleek appearance. The watch pairs exceptionally well with the supplied 20mm stainless steel bracelet, holding similar finishes that completes the overall sporty character.

Seiko's LumiBrite

On the dial itself, the layout seems to be unchanged from its predecessor at first glance. However, the Prospex 200M Automatic PADI Sumo Ref. SBDC121 features a new set of slimmer hands and markers with refined proportions. The prominent red second hand adds a pop of colour to the deep black dial. Needless to say, markers and hands are generously coated with Seiko’s famous Lumibrite for a bright and vibrant glow in the dark. Above that, the dial is protected by a flat piece of sapphire for superior scratch resistance, keeping the dial crystal clear for many years to come.
